Ideally, I would have liked to have quoted the Buddha 's own words, and thus have the Buddha speak for himself. But alas, to the best of my knowledge, the Buddha wrote nothing down. We must turn to the words attributed to the Buddha , which I sourced from the oldest texts that are now available, namely the Pali Canon (the Tipitaka ). The quotations are my translations from these Pali texts. For key words, I have provided footnotes where I give the original Pali word and its meanings and varied nuances.
