Seller's Description:
Very good + Quarto, 291pp., illustrated. A crisp, sound, clean copy rebound to style in green cloth with new endpapers and a new pocket in the rear to house the two loose maps (issued thusly). Some very shallow chipping to the edges of the prelims, two small private library markings to title page, as well as the ownership signature of W. H. Polk of Lexington (KY) (apparently a local historian of that city of some note). One marginal corner chip to p. 265--notable, but not approaching any content. Contents clean and fresh, with zero foxing, and all of the illustrations bright. Folding maps in excellent condition, with just a few faint spots to the "profile" map of the river. An unwieldy book often found pretty beat up, this is altogether a very good or better example. Powell, who lost most of his right arm at the Battle of Shiloh, continued in active military service through the end of the Civil War. In the following hears, he conducted several expeditions to explore the natural features, flora and fauna, and human culture of the American West. Though rebound, a handsome, gift-quality example of this important forensic analysis of one of America's great rivers and its surrounding geography. Howes P528, Graff 3336; Sabin 64753.
