Ansel Adams was one of the very greatest landscape photographers of the 20th century. In this book he outlines the working method behind the creation of 40 of his most memorable images. Not only does he set out his successes, but also his mistakes, he does not seek to gloss over them, but allows you to learn from them. If you are interested in producing photographs of the highest technical and aesthetic quality this book is for you. His methods may look antiquated and retrograde, but there is solid reasoning there.
A large format film camera is recommended. This is because 1) a large format lens, having a much larger lens area to circumference, is not so prone to diffraction effects destroying the resolution, 2) a large format negative captures much more of the information gathered by the lens and, 3) a film negative has a much greater tonal range than a digital sensor. Film is not so convenient, certainly, but gives a much better result.
