Neben den Schönen und Prominenten der Welt lichtete der Künstler das Leben von Arbeitern, Demonstrationen gegen den Vietnamkrieg, Kriegsopfer und Landstreicher ab. Zum Jahreswechsel 1989/90 fotografierte er eine Reportageserie über Berliner nach dem Mauerfall. Seine Bilder gelten als schonungslos und detailgenau. 2004 starb Richard Avedon, der einer der berühmtesten Mode-und Porträtfotografen der Welt war.
