What this book will do: Help with uncertainty. When times are hard, uncertainty makes them worse. The changing weather is already hurting the food supply, and famine is a horrifying specter for all people. Hunger brings violence, and a decline in the value of people; everyone becomes a potential victim. The social system, by which we mean all the people who grow our food, deliver it to our neighborhood, make sure the toilets flush and the water flows, keep us mostly safe in our homes, that system, is in trouble, and food shortages and transportation problems will make things worse. Through all that change, we might like a little forewarning, a little glimpse of what might be next, and a way of discussing what the change might mean to our family. Uncertainty would still be there, but we would understand it more, and our guesses about what might come next would be more accurate than simply having no idea at all. What this book won't do: Tell you what to do. This book won't tell you what to store, where to live, or who to associate with. It intends to help you make those decisions yourself.
