With Victoria Roubideaux now at college, the McPheron brothers are alone on their farm once again, yet struggling to settle back into old ways and routines; Tom Guthrie and Maggie Jones, meanwhile, are finding their future together more assured, even while they're still finding their feet as a couple. Alongside these familiar faces and places, however, are new characters and their stories: Betty and Luther, who are struggling to keep their heads above water and their children Joy Rae and Richie out of care; eleven-year-old DJ who has spent much of his supposedly carefree childhood caring for his cantankerous grandfather Walter; DJ's friend Dena, her mother and sister, all of whom are trying to adjust to life and a home without the girls' father. Eloquent and evocative, Eventide paints a convincing, compelling picture of small-town life in Holt County, Colorado.

It is difficult to find a sequel that comes close to being as good as the first book. This one does it in spades. Kent Haruf shines again in this heart warming follow-up to Plainsong. The characters in the book are plain folks, just like most of us. A must read!

Good
A worthy companion to Plainsong, even if not quite working on that level.

A great author
A beautifully written story, but very very sad because it could be about anyone's family, friends or hometown. I enjoy how the author 's focus is not just on one or two characters, but a community that could belong to this generation.

comfort food
bought this the day after reading "Plainsong"(in one day), from my brother, the bookseller. he said i couldn't get this one because he and his bride had to wait 2 years to find out what happened to all the characters. just such a lovely writer, and the book is set up exquisitely.
