"I was puzzled what to do, for I felt ashamed to quit the house on the ground of ghosts, and yet these disturbances deprived me of all quiet in it. Suddenly my landlord rose and went to a door, which opened upon a narrow stairway leading to the story below. The passage was no longer used, and the door fastened, but he contrived to open it. In a moment the mystery was explained: the noises rushed up the stairway in a volume.
