While transporting his runaway teenage daughter Zoe (Jordan Hinson) back to Los Angeles, U.S. Marshal Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson) is derailed by an accident that lands them both in Eureka, a strange, top-secret town populated by geniuses and their families. As a scientist's experiment goes awry, Carter encounters some of the town's quirky residents, starting with the gun-loving Dep. Josefina "Jo" Lupo (Erica Cerra), NASA engineer-turned-auto mechanic Henry Deacon (Joe Morton), Department of Defense liaison Allison Blake (Salli Richardson-Whitfield), and the mysterious bed-and-breakfast operator Beverly Barlowe (Debrah Farentino). When the out-of-control experiment incapacitates Eureka's sheriff, Carter takes over the investigation to find the scientist responsible and, in the midst of mental giants, uses his common-sense approach to problem solving to put an end to the threat. Rather than return to the world they know, Carter and Zoe opt to remain in Eureka, with Carter serving as sheriff and Zoe attending the town's high school. While the residents prove to be quite capable of creating situations that call for a police response, Carter's biggest headaches are brought on by Global Dynamics, a massive research facility that creates technology for both civilian and military use. In the first season of the comedy drama, Carter must deal with a slew of unusual problems, including a crop circle's appearance, a reactivated Cold War-era weapons system, a house that thinks for herself, and rounds of verbal sparring with Nathan Stark (Ed Quinn), the head of Global Dynamics. This was a lovely surprise. It is enjoyable in every episode. I had only seen the pilot on air, til it was switched to SciFi channel and I never forgot about it. It keeps me guessing, for sure. It even has that 'quirky' Matt Frewer in the cast. --Not every character is that quirky, but the entire town is! Everyone is exceptional and each one has a chance to shine, and also to get taken down a peg or two; -and that includes the rock-steady non-genius sheriff , whose daughter is good at keeping him 'honest' in her own somewhat 'gothic' off-beat way.
