Old time values
I had this book when I was a child, and loved it for its bright full vivacious pictures and reptitive familiar characters. Having now read it as an adult to my own children, I can see that the moral values within the book have resounded deeply through my life. Euphonia, the central character, has three friends, Fatly the pig who does everything "Fatly", Briskly the broom who does everything "Briskly" and Mary Anne the boat, who does "very nicely thankyou". Euphonia herself lives by the motto "If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing well". When a flood assaults their home and sends all and sundry down the river, Euphonia, Fatly and Briskly hop into Mary Anne, rescuing stranded critters along the way until the climax of the story - they arrive at a farm where a great picnic lunch is set up waiting for any creatures who need a feed during the ordeal of the flood.
