Samuel Glasse, D.D. was rector of the parish of St. Mary, Wanstead, for a period of twenty-six years; having been presented after the death of Dr. David Home in 1786, by Sir James Tylney-Long, Baronet, lord of the manor of Wanstead and Stonehall, and patron of the living. He was buried in the churchyard, on 5th May, 1812, having survived his wife a little over seven months. Concerning his family, he was son of the Rev. Richard Glasse, of Purton, Wilts.; and grandson of Richard Glasse, Esq., of Winterbourne Basset, in the same county; the latter who matriculated at Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1717, and graduated B.A. in 172o. Samuel Glasse was born in 1735, and after private tuition became a scholar at Westminster School from 1749 to 1752. He matriculated on 4th June in the latter year at Christchurch, Oxford, and graduated B.A. in 1756, and M.A. in 1759; proceeding in 1769 to Bachelor and also Doctor of Divinity. In 1758 he married Hannah, daughter of Giles Clutterbuck, of Mill End, in the parish of Eastington, Herts., gentleman; this alliance is recorded in a pedigree in Clutterbuck's History of Hertfordshire (vol. iii. pp. 3oo-1.) So far as I have been able to ascertain, he had but one son, of whom more anon.
