Numerous famous architects worked on its construction, including Sir John Vanbrugh, William Kent, James Gibbs, Robert Adam, Thomas Pitt and Sir John Soane. By the mid-nineteenth century, however, the estate had fallen into decline and was only saved by the foundation of Stowe School in 1923. Stowe House is now finally being restored to its former glory. This lavishly illustrated book explores the tumultuous history of a house that was once too grand even for royalty.
