Beautiful widow Esperanza's daughter is taken suddenly ill, hospitalized and dies. Fearing that the daughter was contagious, no one will let Esperanza see her daughter before she is buried. Esperanza, not having seen her daughter ill or in the hospital believes that the daughter was not ill, but instead kidnapped for evil purposes. Reacting to a vision of Saint Jude (patron Saint of Hopeless Causes) seen in grease on the glass door of her oven, Esperanza sets off alone to find her daughter. Landing in an town of brothel's, Esperanza obtains a job working in a peep show. There she dresses in her underwear and performs on a set where she nightly gets out her collection of saints and prays for their intervention to help her find her daughter. Phone calls from her priest to advise her to come home do not change the course of Esperanza's crusade. Later Esperanza moves on and meets her own guardian angel. Her quest to find her daughter draws to a logical conclusion and Esperanza's faith remains undaunted. This charming book is whimsical and entertaining. A beautiful translation of a beautiful book. Escandon does a wonderful job painting the portrait of Esperanza, a mother on a quest to find the spirit of her daughter, and of describing the various obscure and famous saints. It is a journey of self-discovery, from living with her friend Soledad to working as a prosituta in La Mansion Rosa. Read this as soon as you can.
