Hepzibah, 60, has lived by herself in the House of the Seven Gables for 30 years, isolated "until her very brain was impregnated with the dry-rot of its timbers." She seems incapable of leaving the house, which has a murky past. The house was built on ground seized by Colonel Pyncheon from its rightful owner, Matthew Maule, who was accused of witchcraft and executed. According to legend, Maule laid a curse upon the Pyncheon family before he died and during the housewarming Colonel Pyncheon was found dead in his armchair. The cause of death, much like the house's past, is also murky. His portrait remains in the house as a symbol of its dark past. Judge Pyncheon arrives to find information about land in Maine, rumored to belong to the family. He threatens Clifford with an insanity hearing unless he reveals details about the land or the location of the missing deed but before Clifford can be brought before the Judge, the Judge mysteriously dies while sitting in Colonel Pyncheon's chair.
