Ergens beginnen wil zowel de literatuurhistoricus als de poezielezer die Hugo Brems altijd is geweest, huldigen. Aan de auteurs werd gevraagd om een essay te schrijven over een markante bundel uit de jongste decennia van onze poeziegeschiedenis, vanaf 1967 (de indiensttreding van Hugo Brems aan de universiteit en zijn debuut als criticus) tot vandaag (de datum van zijn emeritaat). Daartoe werd een lijst van bundels samengesteld die zo goed mogelijk de ontwikkelingen in onze poezie illustreert: telkens een momentopname, en in hun geheel een overzichtelijk beeld. Aan de auteurs - zowel gevestigde namen uit de neerlandistiek als jongere collega's - werd gevraagd om enerzijds aandacht te besteden aan de literair-historische en literair-institutionele inbedding van hun bundel, maar om anderzijds ook daadwerkelijk een of enkele gedichten te lezen. Op die manier kan dit boek optimaal gelden als een verlengstuk van wat Hugo Brems zijn hele leven lang voor ogen stond: poezie als tekst en als context.
