This book is the complete curriculum of Kaleo Academy, a youth initiative within the American Friends Church (Quakers). The purpose of Kaleo Academy is to identify and build the capacity of high-leadership potential Quaker youth for future ministry and service positions in the Friends Church. The whole of the Kaleo Academy experience is designed to empower Friends' youth to experience a greater command of the essential knowledge and key ideas that can be used to give them a great sense of control over their vocational decisions. Faculty from Barclay College and other Friends colleges and universities will be invited to teach at the Kaleo Academy as a means of introducing cohort members to the experience of undergraduate higher education. Informed by the lessons learned from previous successful Lilly Endowment grantees, the Kaleo Academy design described above will intentionally: Introduce youth to the classic Quaker texts, theological resources, and practices that inform the faith and practice of the evangelical Friends Church. Create safe and supportive spaces in large and small groups, face-to-face and online, where youth can explore the meaning and significance of their faith for their own lives. Provide opportunities for reflective worship, celebratory worship, and spiritual formation. Encourage and support youth in critical thinking about their faith as it relates to contemporary social issues and challenges. Enable youth to explore their aspirations and calling and to consider vocations in ministry and service through the evangelical Friends Church in a context of spiritual and theological reflection and discernment. Attend to the theological preparation and support of the Barclay College undergraduate staff serving as peer leaders and mentors. Produce a generation of youth who are empowered to lead effective change in their communities and relationship and, hence, to change their world. Session Tracks 1. Introduction to Biblical Interpretation 2. Historical Quaker Faith and Practice 3. Christian Leadership 4. Contemporary Social Issues and Friends Faith and Practice 5. Calling and Vocation
