Good. Contemporary leather boards, rebacked with modern leather spine. xiv, [2], 303. Portrait of Washington. These letters were taken by the British after the being taken prisoner at Fort Lee. The first seven letters are spurious, and have been attributed to both John Vardill ("Poplicola") and the loyalist, John Randolph. They are reprinted from "Letters from General Washington, to several of his friends in the year 1776, " London, 1777. A sheet was inserted containing a letter from Washington, dated March 3, 1797, denying the authenticity of these first seven letters. In this copy, there are also an hand written notes in the margins indicating which ones were forgeries. Howes and Sabin refer to "spurious letters" on pp. 4-66.
