This release begs for rebirth on some revisionist-leaning indie label, with volumes of essaying about how its twin half-hours of chirping birds and humming crickets -- one each for dawn and dusk at the titular field recording site -- influenced everything from Evol to "Don't Worry, Be Happy." In actuality, while the natural ambience captured is mercifully kept clean of synthesizer/new age meddling, it's pretty typical for recordings of this sort. What the indie brain trust will be drawn to is its cover art and graphic design. The shimmering sliver of orange and red on the cover has already been co-opted by Trans Am for 1997's Surrender to the Night; add in Environments' vintage punch card font and its somewhat threatening cover text -- "The future of music isn't music" -- and you have a record just waiting for a 21st century rebirth. In fact, it's waiting right now on the wall of your local indie holdout, propped at a 200% markup next to an original pressing of the Zaireeka box and Shellac's Terraform on LP. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi
