"The site marked out for the proud capital, which was to have been the Tyre, the Venice, the Amsterdam of the eighteenth century, was overgrown with jungle, and inhabited only by the sloth and the baboon." No wonder the hearts of the adventurers sank within them. Gradually a few of the deserters came back, and another expedition, consisting of three hundred men, under Campbell of Finab--a soldier of tried courage and ability--reached Darien. But the Scots had no heart to recommence the clearance of the ground, or to rebuild the little town. Self-defence led them to RE-COLONIZATION ATTEMPTED. 131 repair the fortifications, but they dwelt chiefly on board of their vessels. Feuds broke out among the idle and disappointed men. An apprehension spread among the weaker and more quiet portion of the band that the others intended to seize them and sell them into slavery in the French and Spanish plantations. Provisions were scanty and bad; and, as if no element of discord should be wanting, the four clergymen who accompanied the expedition estranged the good-will of their flock by holding daily services of three and even six hours in length, and denouncing as children of the Evil One all who showed irritation under that irksome dispensation. The Spaniards, encouraged by the policy of England, were now active in their hostility to the colony. When Campbell of Finab heard a rumour of their approach, he resolved to anticipate them.
