Peuchet en su Ensayo de estadistica publicado en Paris en 1800, gradua en Francia el numero de solteros de 18 a 80 anos en 1.451,063, y el de todos los hombres de cualquier estado comprendidos en la misma edad de 5.000,000. No se ve claramente en que epoca se ha hecho esta apreciacion; pero como el autor coloca estos resultados en el numero de los que se verifican en los tiempos ordinarios, es muy probable que trate de la epoca anterior a la revolucion. Admitamos, pues, que el numero de 1.451,063 representa toda la reunion de hombres solteros aptos para el servicio militar al principio de la revolucion. Antes de la guerra, la poblacion de la Francia se graduo por la Asamblea nacional en 26.363,074 almas, cuyo calculo no puede creerse exagerado. Necker, que no cuenta mas que 24.800,000, afirma que en la epoca en que escribia, los nacimientos subian anualmente a 1.000,000; y por consiguiente empleando su multiplicador 25'/4 la poblacion total no bajaba de 26.000,000.
