Nuala McGann Drescher received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from St. Joseph's College and a Master of Arts Degree and Ph.D. degree from the University of Delaware. She was attracted to the study of the history of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers because of her basic interest in the impact of science and technology on the shaping and development of fundamental human institutions, such as the city. She is the Coordinator of the Urban Studies Degree Program at Buffalo State College, where she is a Professor of History, is President of the New York State Labor History Association, and is currently involved in research on the history of the so-called "Hometown Plans, " in the struggle to integrate the American building trades. She was also the President of United University Professions. The United States Army Corps of Engineers has at its disposal the talent, skill, ingenuity, and resourcefulness that are requisite for the creation of a viable defense establishment, as well as the construction of numerous public works projects erected for the...public good; it has played a key role in the discovery and development of the wealth of the Great Lakes region. This territory, marked by rapids, falls, and river systems, which link the five Great Lakes, continues to challenge the Corps engineers in their efforts to plan and build harbors: civil engineers to widen streams, forge canals, erect bridges, and harness the might of falling water by constructing dams and fabricating power projects, and military engineers to design and execute facilities that augment the national security. Daily, the Corps continues to live' up to its motto Essayons, "let us try, " persevering in the important tasks with which it is charged and assuming additional roles as regional problems become manifest. Whenever called upon, the Corps has provided the scientific and technical expertise needed to cope with the discordant forces of nature.
