As a trio of accordion, bajo sexto, and contrabass, Los Alacranes De Durango create a full and energetic norteño sound on En Vivo!. As for what differentiates them from so many other similar artists working in the same field (several on Arhoolie Records), you'd be hard-pressed to come up with specifics, though Eusevio Gallegos generates some nice staccato bursts of accordion at the beginning of some tracks. The slow, mournful instrumental "Alma Angelina" makes for a good variation in mood in the midst of what's for the most part an upbeat, perky set. Perhaps because it's a mid-price release, there are no details about the group or English song translations in the liner notes, which does enhance the appreciation of such recordings for non-specialists. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
