Released in the midst of Larry Hernández's breakthrough success with 16 Narco Corridos (2009), En Vivo Desde Culiacán is a raw, live recording from Culiacán, the capital city of Sinaloa, Mexico. Put out on CD with the new single "Carita de Angel," a studio recording appended to the end of the 13-track disc, and on DVD with four additional tracks ("El Niño," "La Venganza del M1," "El Más Bonita de Todas," "El Diablo de la Familia"), En Vivo Desde Culiacán finds the up-and-coming regional Mexican superstar in a spirited mood, performing a colorful set of corridos for an enthusiastic crowd that eats out of his hand. The crowd interaction is entertaining and goes a long way toward showing that Hernández is much more than a gifted storytelling songwriter with an acclaimed album of all-too-real narco corridos. He's also an engaging live performer with a wide-ranging repertoire, less than half of which is comprised of material from 16 Narco Corridos. The five songs from that album performed here ("Mal Encachado y Buchón," "El Toque de la Jairo," "El Baleado," "El Ejecutor," "El Taliban") are well-chosen and interspersed throughout the set. They go over well with the audience, the marijuana anthem "El Toque de la Jairo" and the hit single "El Baleado" in particular. The recording quality of En Vivo Desde Culiacán is rough around the edges. The vocals aren't especially clear, which is frustrating because Hernández's lyrics are his primary attraction, and the instrumentation is a bit ramshackle. The roughness of the recording enhances the ambience of En Vivo Desde Culiacán, however, adding a touch of authenticity. As for the studio recording "Carita de Angel," it's a valuable addition that presents Hernández in a romantic light not heard on 16 Narco Corridos. It's a sure-fire hit single that was smartly chosen for release at the very moment Hernández was crossing over to the regional Mexican mainstream. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi
