Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat is the story of Emmy a lonely girl ignored by her fellow classmates. She lives in a mansion and has a pair of absentee parents and a super strict nanny, all classic elements of children's literature. The fact that she is able to talk to her class's pet rat, just make her that much more eccentric.
But things are not entirely what they seem as we learn alongside Emmy in this fun book. With the help of some new friends, only some of them human, Emmy must figure out a way to save herself and her parents from falling prey to her evil nanny.
Written for probably a fourth to fifth grader, this adult reader did find her credulity stretched somewhat by the discovery of the rodent city and the somewhat superfluous description of the pawball match. (Note: my credulity was not stretched by a talking rat or a variety of rodents with magical powers.) Kids though will likely enjoy these little additions to Emmy's adventure.
This is fun stuff, and I think the subject matter would lend itself to a good read aloud (one chapter at a time, that is) for younger children as well.
