This is one of the most famous children's books ever written and certainly doesn't need my recommendation to sell it. It's an exciting story, but the emphasis is upon personal courage and friendship rather than on danger and mayhem. The edition I ordered (Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1945) was a school text with a helpful glossary (though the German is very easy, so you probably don't need that). I should point out, however, that contrary to my expectations it was printed in German black letter, which I've always found irritating and difficult to read. That editorial decision came as a surprise in an American edition printed after the war.
