Many white pelicans migrate north to Canada in the spring to make nests. When winter approaches, they go back to the southern U.S. states and Mexico. At the beginning of the winter in 2020, a pelican was spotted at a lake in southern Alberta. All of the other pelicans had gone south. The pelican that had remained behind couldn't fly well. It had been injured. The lone pelican had to learn how to manage very cold conditions. The pelican survived that winter. Even though the pelican had been able to fly better, it decided to stay in southern Alberta for a second winter in 2021--when the other pelicans went south. And once again, the pelican survived very harsh wintry conditions. It had learned how to deal well with all aspects of Alberta winters. The pelican had been able to fly much better still in 2022. But it stayed behind for a third time, as the winter of 2022-23 approached. The third winter was different though. Halfway through the winter, the pelican decided that it could fly well enough to leave. And it flew away. Apparently, it flew south, since no one saw it again in Alberta. This book is a story about the pelican with the injured wing. The pelican was smaller than many of the other pelicans. So, it seemed that the pelican was female--since females are usually smaller than males. She was given the name Elsa, since she had to withstand frigid conditions like the princess in a famous movie. The book has photos of Elsa and her pelican friends from 2020 to the beginning of 2023. Almost every page contains a photo--taken by the book's author. We don't know everything about Elsa. But the author of the story filled in the knowledge gaps about Elsa as well as he could. Hopefully, you will enjoy the story of this amazing pelican.
