This poem now book is thin, yet holds a maximum amount of power. Based off of experiences from the author's childhood (the historical figures in the book were actually guests in her home), it is complemented with the beautiful illustrations. This book holds a standard for many of today's children's books which really aren't worthy at all. The title is the perfect example of the situation a lot of Black children are faced with today: miseducation about our heritage. The fact that Duke Ellington could be reduced to a street name, the fact that I know many children of color who don't know about Yaa Asantewa and believe Dr. King ended enslavement is appalling. This book is an excellent introduction to people children do not know of.
