She was born in 1780, a year of many notable happenings. In America, that year, Major Andr??? was hanged as a British spy, and the Count de Rochambeau arrived in Rhode Island with a French army. In England, the manufacture of cotton cloth was begun at Man chester. In France, the use of torture in public trials was abolished by the King, Louis XVI, who was to lose his life a few years later In the terrible French Revolution.
