PRUSSIA (136,700 square miles; population, 24,000,000).--This kingdom is the largest and most important of the German territories. It comprises a large part of the great plain" of Northern Europe, and some small mountain chains. It consists of thirteen provinces. The government is a monarchy, nearly absolute, but admitting of a Parliament, who discuss public affairs. Old Prussia, on the shores of the Baltic, has a low coast. The interior is crossed by the Vistula, and it includes large forests and sandy heaths. Kbnigsberg (107,000) is the chief town of the eastern, Dantzig (90,000) of the western part. The latter town has a great export trade in corn. Memel (19,000) has a large trade in timber. Elbing (28,000) is a large town. Posen adjoins Old Prussia to the south, and was formerly part of Poland. The chief town is Posen (54,000). Pomerania, on the Baltic coast, is to the west of Old Prussia. Stettin, on the Oder (74,000), is its chief town. Stralsund (27,000) is also important. Brandenburg contains Berlin, the capital of Prussia (705,000). It is a modern city, on a wide, sandy plain, with some fine buildings, but very dull, and without much business. The town of Brandenburg (25,500) is large. Potsdam (43,000) is near Berlin. Frankfort-on-the-Oder (4,000) is a place of important trade. At Spandau (17,300) is a celebrated political prison.
