The human body, containing in its composition no appreciable quantity of magnetizable material, has practically the same reluctivity as ordinary air; that is to say, the interposition of the human body in a magnetic circuit does not appreciably affect the distribution of the magnetic flux. For example, if a delicately suspended magnetic needle be deflected by a magnet placed at a certain distance from it, the direct interposition of the body of a person between the magnet and needle is not found to produce any appreciable effect, although if the same person wears, for example, an iron rimmed pair of spectacles, or carries a key in his pocket, the effect on the needle may be very marked. This is because the magnetic flux, acting on the needle, passes through the body of the person as readily as through the previously intervening air, but the magnetic influence of the iron rimmed spectacles, or the key, may have a powerful influence on a delicately suspended needle even though twenty feet away from it. Not only is the reluctivity of the human body practically the same as that of other non-magnetic materials, but portions of the body subjected to powerful magnetic fluxes do not appear to have produced in them any appreciable physiological effects. Although experiments are still wanting concerning the physiological influence which long sustained powerful magnetic flux may exert, yet it has been shown that human beings and dogs subjected for many minutes to intensities of magnetic flux of about 2,500 gausses, and, therefore, about 5,000 times that of the earth's magnetic flux, have not experienced any influence that...

Very Good with no dust jacket. Very Good in None jacket A clean, tight copy of the first edition of this book, with a sound binding and a pristine interior. There is a little light wear to the binding, but for a book of its age, it's quite good. It is unclear to me exactly what the therapeutics referred to in the title are, but I found references to cautery with electric knives, and to electrolysis. (I don't think shock therapy had been invented yet. ) The book gives clear descriptions of the basics of electricity, and I'm sure a close reading would turn up more ideas about how this primal force could be used for medical purposes. As is invariably the case with 19th century books, the illustrations are wonderful.
