Not illustrated. 1911 Excerpt: ...strong or too far off the core the current will have to take an appreciable time to grow before it is strong enough to attract the armature and break the circuit; the current will then be too strong, with corresponding sparking at the platinums. On the other hand, the spring should not be too weak or too near the core, or the armature will be attracted too soon before the current has grown strong enough to give a good fat spark at the secondary. In practice the spring should be set so that the armature before the break is about in. or fa away from the core. Sometimes it will be noticed that if the armature touches the core sparks occur between the core and the primary. The cure is to drive a small wood or fibre peg between the core wires till nearly flush with the face of the bundle; this will prevent the armature quite touching when fully attracted. Sometimes it will be found in cheap coils that, owing to the core wires being insufficiently annealed or soft, the armature when attracted will stick to the core, and remain there even when the current is switched off. The above described remedy will also effectively cure this fault. A source of much destruction to tremblers is the too tight screwing down of the platinum screw, causing a heavy current to pass, with a consequent burning up and pitting of the platinum points. Always adjust the platinums as lightly as possible to keep the coil buzzing, with perhaps half a turn extra to allow for wear. If a coil needs to have its platinums tightly screwed up to give a fair spark, it is a sign that the secondary needs looking to, and no good purpose will be served by screwing the platinums tighter. In coils having a spring to tension the armature, such as in Fig. 37, it is best to work with the spring as weak as pos...
