On July 20, 1810 at the corner of the Plaza Mayor de Santa Fe in Bogota there was an angry dispute. Punches and insults were thrown and, as a result of that, crystallized the independence movement in New Granada. In the center of everything was a piece of pottery that was known ever since as the Llorente Vase. Years later the artist Epifanio Garay gave the National Museum of Colombia a piece that, according to his own statement, was nothing less than the real vase around the brawl of 1810. Since then this subject has become a national icon. On the eve of the bicentenary of national independence the University took the opportunity to investigate thoroughly the object itself, its history and context and the necessary task of restoring it. These were the tasks that took the External University of Colombia, through its Faculty of Cultural Heritage and with the assistance of some outside professionals.
