Esta obra literaria le ha encantado publico desde cuando primero fue publicada en 1882, porque aunque ocurren episodios de inmoralidad en la historia presentada, las personas implicadas son de buen caracter. El Abate Constantin gozo desde su aparicion de una boga inmensa, hoy va por la 174 edicion. En el mismo ano que aparecio, se publico en la Biblioteca Popular de Buenos Aires. Ludovic Halevy fue elegido academico, y en la sesion publica del 4 de febrero de 1886, ocupo el sillon vacio por muerte del Conde D'Haussonville. Del discurso pronunciado por Pailleron, director de la Academia, sacamos el juicio sobre El Abate Constantin: ...De este genero fino hasta refinado, de esta literatura elegante y discreta, vuestro volumen Dos matrimonios es quiza el tipo mas acabado, ejemplar mas simpatico, pero el tiempo me ha sido contado para que pueda detenerme. Prefiero ir directa, francamente, a aquellas obras que senalan las fechas de vuestros mas grandes triunfos: El Abate Constantin, La invasion, y desde luego, y sobre todo... miro si la boveda de esta cupula austera va a desplomarse en mi cabeza... sobre todo El senor y la senora Cardinal."
