Edessa (modern Urfa) is located in the NW edge of the Mesopotamian highlands. The prehellenic name of the settlement was Urhai, grecisized as Orhoe. Its re-founder was Seleucos I, Nicator (302 b. C.). Because of the many springs and rivers around it he was renamed Edessa, recalling the macedonian one, as it was the habit among the alexandrine descendants.
