Edessa (modern Urfa) is located in the NW edge of the Mesopotamian highlands. The prehellenic name of the settlement was Urhai, grecisized as Orhoe. Its re-founder was Seleucos I, Nicator (302 b. C.). Because of the many springs and rivers around it he was renamed Edessa, recalling the macedonian one, as it was the habit among the alexandrine descendants. In Edessa we notice not a full grecization but an amalgamate of the Greek spirit with anatolian elements. The book using all the written sources available provides the first attempt to put down on a topographical map the city's important buildings (churches, cult-sites, administrative center) and landmarks, with excessive success.
