This 1990 CD is taken from the same concert that resulted in the first volume. Trombonist Chris Barber's band (which includes trumpeter Pat Halcox, John Crocker on reeds, two guitars, electric bass and drums plus guest Wild Bill Davis who is heard here exclusively on piano) mostly plays a supporting role behind the alto and clarinet of Russell Procope. Since Procope was greatly underutilized during his years with Duke Ellington (being content to be overshadowed by Johnny Hodges), these two CDs are valuable for showcasing him. The material on Vol. II. consists of eight Ellington songs, Billy Strayhorn's "Take the 'A' Train" plus Procope's "Blues for Duke." Three of the numbers feature Procope in a quartet while the remaining seven have the full nonet. Highlights include "Squatty Roo," "Caravan," "It Don't Mean aThing" and "The Jeep Is Jumpin'." Fun music and one of Russell Procope's finest showcases of his career. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
