Erroll Garner was a frequent visitor to the recording studio throughout most of his career, so it should come as no surprise that there was a lot of valuable unissued material left behind for discovery following his death in 1977. This CD collects tracks from several separate sessions of the early '60s, with bassist Eddie Calhoun and drummer Kelly Martin providing steady support for the leader. Garner's humorous side is apparent in the breezy take of the old chestnut "Somebody Stole My Gal" and a peppy "My Blue Heaven." The march-like introduction to "For All We Know" also provides a bit of amusement. Garner is a bit more reserved with his gently swinging setting of "I Hadn't Anyone 'Till You." Comedian and occasional jazz pianist Dudley Moore's liner notes prove insightful. There aren't really any surprises in store for those familiar with Garner's work, but this valuable collection has been out of print since the early '90s and will be increasingly difficult to acquire. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi
