For in such a history a general perspective is obtained, which is not possible when the events in the various countries Of Western Europe, those in what was once the eastern half of the Roman Empire, and those in England,1 have all to be studied in different books. It is difficult to give the history Of so long a period in a condensed way without making it dull and uninteresting. I have endeavoured to avoid this result (at the risk Of a charge Of unevenness) by going from time to time into detail regarding particular episodes while these occasional glimpses into the circumstances and life of the time enable the reader to picture the same in the case of other episodes which Of necessity have been more briefly narrated.
