I thought East was a very creative story as was it epic and charming. A very nice re-telling of ?East of the Sun and West of the Moon.? The writing style was pretty basic, but I thought that the perspective change with chapters was very inventive. I thought that the story was a bit lengthy in some places, but a bit brief in others where I would have liked to read more. It could have been a few pages less, but overall a very good story. [close]

Beautifully crafted
East by Edith Pattou is a retelling of the Old Norwegian tale East o' the Sun, West o' the Moon. I loved the original story and when I saw East was a retelling of the story I had to read it right away. This re-telling was brilliant in that the author brought all the characters to life, and took time so that you could get to know them and how they felt. So many of the re-tellings of this story show the mother as being evil without an explanation of why, in East the author takes time in explaining why the mother reacted the way she did to Rose (read the story and you'll understand) where as in the original (and so many re-tellings) you didn't get to read that. I've read other reviews pegging this tale as Beauty and the Beast I guess in some sense it is only with snow and its set in the Northern Lands. I found East to be an engrossing read and would highly recommend it to anyone.
