Review, Jan. 1876. 41 Strype, GrindaVs Life, book i. chap. v. 61 ff. suspicion on the part of their Catholic fellow-countrymen that they met to conspire against the King of Spain. Accordingly their pastor, the learned Cassiodoro de Reyna (Reinius), addressed a strongly-argued request to the Bishop of London and to the Secretary of State, William Cecil, for authority to celebrate their worship in public.42 His successor was Cipriano de Valera; and, eight years later, in 1568, we find a certain Antonio de Corro (Corranus) of Seville, surnamed Bellerive, formerly pastor at Antwerp, head of the Spanish Church in London, stirring up a controversy. He became divinity reader at the Temple and at Oxford; and died canon of St. Paul's, at London, in 1591. In 1560 appeared the Confession de Fe Christiana (preface dated 4 Jan. 1559, i.e. 1560) of these Spanish Christians (hecka por ciertos fieles espanoles). They counted a membership of about sixty, among whom may be mentioned the names of the "senores," Baron, M. de Questa, Marco de la Palma, and, above all, the celebrated Adriano de Sarravia, born at Hesdin (Flanders), collaborator with Guy de Brez in the Confession of Faith of the Walloon churches in the Low Countries, who became professor of theology at Cambridge, after having been at Leiden, 1597.43 The Italian Church, however, was re-constituted by the exertions of Sir William Cecil, in whose house it had long assembled.
