Seller's Description:
Very Good. First edition (no additional printings listed). Original brown blind ruled cloth, stamped gilt lettering and decorative spine, 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches, all edges red, illustrated with engraved frontispiece by A H Ritchie. Hardcover, very good. Corners bumped, fading and drop marks on cloth, spine sunned, a few approximately 1/8th inch nicks at head and foot. Internally, contemporary previous owner's gift inscription (Mrs E F and Mary Quinby, or Quimby, Mount Prospect, New Castle, Westchester County, New York), moderate foxing throughout, otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked; probably never really read. Biography (with numerous excerpts from her letters) of Mary Elizabeth North, born into a rather prosperous family in Ashridge, Scarborough, Hudson valley, NY, which fell into relative poverty at the outbreak of the Civil War, but still managed to continue her religious and secular education. She arrived in New Orleans in 1863, which, despite the war, seems to have been full of "universal gayety (sic), and even dissipation", but she instead devoted herself to more pious pursuits, and taught the infant class at the Felicity Street Methodist Episcopal Church and an African-American Sunday school. Due to ill health, probably tuberculosis, she returned to NY in 1864, visited Passaic, Baltimore and Washington, DC, but soon died. There follows an additional chapter concerning the death of her brother, Adolphus, who also seems to have suffered from tuberculosis, who was sent on a voyage to Buenos Aires, but died at sea, aged 17. Biography; religion; Christian; travel; history; Americana.
