Sechele's nalve(4 is responsible for the following: "Seeing me anxious that his people should believe the word of Christ, he once said: 'Do you imagine these people will ever believe by your merely talking to them? I can make them do. nothing except by thrashing them; and if you like, I shall call my head-men, and with our litupa (whips of rhinoceros hide) we will soon make them all believe together.'" Another danger to be guarded against, lest the religious culture of servants be marred or hindered, lies here: The poor have a prejudice against the rich, the laboring against the ruling classes. If the servant does not always partake of this feeling toward his master, he is apt to indulge the pleasing and natural illusion of all those whose lot in this life is considered lowly, if not hard. Lowliness of condition is mistaken for lowliness of heart--abjectness for humility. Because they labor here, therefore they shall have rest hereafter: because-they serve in this world, they shall have crowns in the next. If "buffeted (or corrected) for their faults," never so justly, the badge of martyrdom is assumed. Every thing endured, for whatever cause, is thankworthy.
