The tracks on this compilation are dub in the non-reggae sense of the term -- not, for the most part, a drastically remixed variation on a pre-existing reggae theme, but rather a collection of low-key, down tempo electronica compositions that draw on reggae's penchant for slow, melodic basslines and sinuous but relaxed rhythms. This is mainly club music, but it's primarily designed more for the chill-out room than the dancefloor. Mr. Electric Triangle's "Under the Sun (Beaverheadz Mix)" is definitely funky, but its slow-as-molasses groove and prominent piano, flute, and jazz guitar create more of a couch-riding groove than a booty-shaking one. The normally rambunctious Hybrid Device offers a couple of unusually restrained numbers, the minimalist "Rhesus (Saryu's St. Simian Mix)" and "Substation (Loose Definition Remix)," the latter of which features one of the most explicitly reggae-derived atmospheres of the album. Other tracks vary in both intensity and interest, but this is a very serviceable album overall. DJ Shawn Francis creates a very fine continuous mix for extra relaxation. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi
