Lovecraft's work is an unwieldy body of short stories and novellas with multiple threads that have some limited points of contact. This makes collecting his work in a coherent fashion difficult, since he pursued those threads more or less concurrently. The so-called "Dream Cycle" or "Dunsanian" stuff tended to appear earlier, though Lovecraft revisited that thread later too. This collection includes the key stories in that "cycle," though the collection also includes stuff written later and not necessarily linked to any cycle. There are also some fragments. Key pieces include the Randolph Carter stories, notably "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath." This volume also includes the novella, "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward," which stands apart from the main cycles and yet is one of Lovecraft's longest pieces. I've not found either in other collections (except the super-long and super-inclusive collections), so if you're looking for a book of manageable size with stories that complement other Del Rey volumes with e.g. the Cthulhu Cycle, this one is a nice complement.

A collection of stories that all either came from dreams or are dream related, conjured up by the master of the macabre. HP Lovecraft is known to write down his dreams and turn them into stories and that's what he did with a lot of these writings.
