A fine tenor and soprano saxophonist, Elias Haslanger performs ten of his challenging but generally swinging originals on this 2006 CD. The sidemen are not exactly household names at this point but all are excellent players, particularly trumpeter Pete Rodriguez. The music is modern mainstream jazz for the early 21st century, with fresh chord changes, brooding improvisations, and a melancholy feel that has some similarities to Wayne Shorter's solo work of the 1960s. Well worth checking out. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
