The slow movements from Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2, and Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 exemplify the lyrical side of the concerto and offer quiet, reflective moods appropriate for a compilation of dream melodies. Yet much of the rest of the program seems arbitrarily selected and a little resistant to the CD's stated theme or any other rationale. The Tchaikovsky and Grieg piano concertos are perhaps inescapable candidates for inclusion, but their Allegro movements work energetically and adversely against the dominant mood of reverie. The Liszt/Weber Polonaise brillante is another peculiar choice, a trivial arrangement which, in spite of its abundant pianistic pyrotechnics, hardly qualifies as a concerto movement.
