One of the most popular and influential video games ever makes its way to the big screen in this sci-fi thriller. A coalition of Earth's scientific and military interests have established a research colony called Olduvai on the planet Mars, but one day all communication from the outpost stops and no one can tell what has happened -- though the final messages suggest it's not good. But Sarge (Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock) and Reaper (Karl Urban), leaders of the RRTS team, soon discover the situation is far more grim than they could have imagined. What's there to say about Doom that has not already been said? It was a box office failure, critics hated it, fans blowtorched it, and it slowly died out. I myself had this on UMD for the PSP back in 2008 and watched it many times. How does the film hold up 18 years later though? Let's find out.
Doom took on a heavy workload to begin with, I mean after all, how can you not only make a movie about the biggest selling video game, but how do you make it good? The answer came before the film. In 2004, Doom 3 was released that replaced action for horror. Doom's direction is directly lifted from Doom 3, even the creature design. The most obvious sin the film commits is the explanation for the creatures. Other sins offered are some hammy dialogue and some half-baked acting at times from some strong name actors.
Despite all of its flaws (and there are several) Doom in a way, made a more loyal adaptation than most video game film adaptations (Example, see 2007's Hitman) Doom is definitely worth a romp through if you look at this as very loosely based off of Doom 3, or you throw the game out the window and just watch it as a film. It was better in high school, but Doom has not aged horribly or even badly, even taking the nostalgia goggles off it still holds its own for what it is.

What can I say, most any teenage boy would enjoy this movie. It was purchased for my grandson. We watched it together and I was surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did.
