Audience: General/trade. Doodlebug BY IRENE BRADY PUBLISHED BY HOUGHTON MIFFLIN CO-WEEKLY READER BOOK COPYRIGHT 1977-HARDCOVER CONDITION GOOD-HAS MAGIC MARKER ON FRONT COVER-INSIDE VERY GOOD A young girl finds that the injured, disheveled pony she buys out of pity at an auction is really the black stallion of her dreams. BOOK REVIEW When I was a kid, I found this book among the collection of books of my 3rd grade teacher had in our classroom and I kept borrowing it so much that she let me keep the book at the end of the school year. A few months later, I was lucky enough to save my money to buy my very own horse and I found a cheap but very sweet, almost black, small horse of my own at an auction that had no papers and had no idea who he was or who he had belonged too before he was brought to a pay-for-rides stable. When my mom asked me what I wanted to name him, I immediately told her he would be my very own Doodlebug. (I called him Doodles for short. ) Turns out my "no papers" pony could actually do high level Dressage and was an amazing jumper, allowing me to compete at the Junior Olympic level until I outgrew him in my early teens, after which I used him for lessons. He also went on to win a bronze medal in the Paralympic Games in 1996 and was on the Gold Medal winning team. My pony is no longer with us, but I still have this book and the story of a pony that was more than what he seemed at first glance to remind me of him. I highly recommend this book for any kid, but especially horse crazy ones like I was. It's also a good story to teach kids to not judge others by what is on the surface, because you never know what might be under the exterior.
