'What a lot of love there is in the world!' she said, and she went into her room, and, throwing open the window, knelt down beside it and looked out. The cool evening breeze stole softly in and kissed her cheek. Outside there was nothing but perfect calm and rest. Soft lights and shadows lay on the grass, and the rustling trees whispered gently to each other, as if they knew already that their days were numbered, and the first brown leaves had come to say that autumn was waiting to scatter them in the dust. 'It's all love, ' said Patience; but the smile with which the words began changed again to a sigh, and her head went swiftly down into her folded hands, while a few scalding tears fell on to the sill. 'I'm so tired, ' she moaned, 'and it's hard to wait! Why should not / have a little of the love Oh, my darling, my darling!' For a minute or two the storm swept over her in its full force, but then the brave head was raised, and she could smile even through her tears. A few drops had fallen on a little well-worn volume which lay on the sill, and she wiped them tenderly off, turning with reverent hands to the page which held the simple inscription--'Duncan Bernard, his Mother's Bible.' and underneath two dates, one in the same handwriting, the other in hers.
