When I checked Epinions.com to see if this was up for review yet, it was not, and I was redirected to a list of self-help books; the first or second listed was called DON'T WASTE YOUR LIFE. What a statement! If/when DOLLHOUSE is available for review at Epinions.com, how could I possibly top that?
But DOLLHOUSE did just come out this week, along with the latest Kim-and-Kris-mess and Kourtney's announcement of her second pregnancy. Today at TheDailyBeast.com, there was a literary quiz: "Do the following quotes come from the Kardashians' DOLL HOUSE or Henrik Ibsen's A DOLL'S HOUSE?" And I had just been wondering how much mileage could be gotten from the similarity of the titles! I wonder what's next!
DOLLHOUSE is Khloe, Kim, and Kourtney's YA-fiction kollaboration (k'mon, you saw that koming!), the story of about a year in the life of the blended Romero-LeBlanc clan. Kat Romero runs her own restaurant, staffed by her daughters: 21-year-old Kass, a business major at USC; 20-year-old Kamille, who craves fame and especially refueled fortune; and 16-year-old Kyle, who is far from sweet or scholarly. The girls' father, film producer David Romero, died in a boating accident about 4 years before, about the same time the family fortune was similarly wiped-out. Kat's second husband is baseball legend Beau LeBlanc, whose 16-year-old son Benjy and 10-year-old daughter Brianna stay with him more often than they're with their own mother. Maison Romero-LeBlanc is the saner, safer environment for them...most of the time.
Kamille's mission is to make enough money to buy The Romero Family Home back--they had to sell it after the double tragedy, but she still considers it theirs and is determined that it will be again. She wouldn't exactly mind being famous, either. Who would? Well, 21st-century fame...hmm. That means that when little sis Kyle and little kid stepsis Brianna get on the Internet to do their homework, the Information Superhighway is likely to be polluted with all sorts of ABSOLUTELY TRUE! (according to inside sources) filthy rumors and NSFW Photoshopped pics of their very own sister! Or even themselves at their worst moments. Ah yes, 21st-century fame...But Kamille wants fame, and guess what!
You could do worse. This is beach-read territory, and you're probably just about ready for a beach day. I like that this family has Sunday Night Dinners (wait 'til you see how Kyle spices them up! But stick around to learn what dessert graces the table most often, and why....) Yes, there are sweet moments. There are too-totally-up-to-the-minute moments. There are WTF moments, wacky acronyms, TNs of TXTNG, fits of profanity, alternating voices, unreality, and too-real reality. There's a really weird typo, in the Kindle version at least. Kat's best friend goes by Pippa. Kat is caught off-guard by a land-line phone call, and not just by the news it brings.
Go ahead, embrace the kraziness. But by all means, balance it with a (re?)-read of Henrik Ibsen's A DOLL'S HOUSE, and/or Clare Booth Luce's 1970 SLAM THE DOOR SOFTLY (featuring Nora and Thaw Wald as a budding women's-libber and her bewildered-but-scoffing husband)...and/or John Piper's DON'T WASTE YOUR LIFE!
