Although Dohnányi was a serious promoter of both Bartók and Kodály, his own works have not, until recently, enjoyed the scope of performance as his younger counterparts. Dohnányi's compositional output was extensive and encompassed a wide scope of genres, notably chamber music featured on this album. Anyone still unfamiliar with his works should do themselves a favor and start their exposure with this album. The string trio, a notoriously difficult genre for which to compose well, is an extraordinary contribution to the literature. The performance heard here by the Beethoven String Trio accentuates the more angular, rhythmic aspects of Hungarian music while still providing some tenderness...
