A few pages missing corners from dog-ears. Hinge crack inside back cover. 192 pages. Brother and sister's dog has pups and they reluctantly give the lone male to their friend Fritz who is too poor to buy a dog. Backdrop of story is on a border of two European counttries where the childrens' happiness is affected by burdens put upon their parents and where freedom is in peril. When Toby is lost, the three children look through heavily guarded woods and railway tunnels trying to find Toby, so dear to his master.
